Living in Salt Lake City, Provo, or Ogden and planning a trip home to visit parents or family in China? You do not need a flight to Los Angeles to queue at the consulate: Utah is in the LA consular district, so mail your documents to us and we handle drop-off, pickup, and return mailing.

The short answer: from Utah, a China family visit (Q2) visa can be done entirely by mail. The Q2 visa is for short-term family visits — visiting relatives in China for no more than 180 days. For a stay over 180 days, the long-term family reunion visa is Q1. Here is the Utah-specific process, documents, timing, and fees.
After the 2024 consular district adjustment, the Los Angeles consulate covers Southern California, Arizona, New Mexico, Utah, Colorado, Hawaii, and the Pacific Islands. If you live in Utah, your visa goes to Los Angeles — not San Francisco or Chicago. Include one proof of Utah residence with your application: a Utah driver's license, state ID, utility bill, or bank statement. Driving from Salt Lake City to Los Angeles takes about 10 hours, so mailing it in is the cheaper option.
The invitation letter and proof of relationship are the two items most often returned for correction: an unclear relationship or incomplete inviter information will trigger a request for more documents. Non-U.S. citizens add proof of legal residence in the U.S.; if you have held a China visa before, send the old passport too so the consulate can check your record.
Regular consulate processing takes 4 business days to pickup; express takes 3 business days and needs consulate approval. Add the Utah–Los Angeles mailing time both ways, and allow about 2 weeks in total even when everything goes smoothly — the closer your departure date, the earlier you should mail. Fees, stated separately: full service $200 + government fee $140 + courier $20; drop-off and pickup only (you complete the form yourself) $120 + government fee $140; express adds a $25 government express fee + our $50–$100 express fee. Family visits often mean several applicants traveling together: from the second applicant on, the service fee is 20% off; government and courier fees are never discounted. The consulate website is the final authority.
From Utah, a family visit visa is a four-step mail-in job: contact us for the checklist and you can start the same day — no flight to California for a visa. See also our Utah service page.
