On October 15, 2026, the Chinese Consulate General in Los Angeles issued a notice urging Chinese nationals in the US: download the Ministry of Foreign Affairs' "China Consular" (中国领事) app and complete "Overseas Citizen Registration" (海外公民登记). The bottom line: if you live, study, or work in the US long-term, spend a few minutes on this registration — it helps the consulate reach and assist you faster in an emergency.
Overseas Citizen Registration is a new module in the MFA's "China Consular" app, now fully rolled out. When registering, choose the Chinese embassy or the consulate-general covering your US address (in the LA consular district, that's the Consulate General in Los Angeles), then fill in the required information as prompted.
The consulate says it will use registration data to push targeted safety alerts and provide more timely, effective consular protection and assistance. Simply put: the more complete your information, the faster the consulate can reach you when it matters.
The notice states clearly: your submitted information will be strictly protected — just make sure it is true, accurate, and complete. Registration runs through the MFA's official app; your data is not handed to third parties.
Original notice (Chinese): "提醒在美中国公民进行'海外公民登记'" (published October 15, 2026).
