The short answer: from Colorado, a China tourist visa can be done entirely by mail. Colorado has no Chinese consulate, but it belongs to the Consulate General of China in Los Angeles, and the consulate does not require applicants to appear in person — an agent may drop off and pick up for you. Here is the Colorado-specific process, documents, timing, and fees.

1. Why Los Angeles is your consulate

After the 2024 consular district adjustment, the Los Angeles consulate covers Southern California, Arizona, New Mexico, Utah, Colorado, Hawaii, and the Pacific Islands. If you live in Colorado, your visa goes to Los Angeles — not San Francisco or Chicago. Include one proof of Colorado residence with your application: a Colorado driver's license, state ID, utility bill, or bank statement.

2. Tourist (L) visa documents: four essentials

  • Your passport: valid for at least 6 more months, with at least 2 blank pages;
  • The online application form: complete the COVA online form and print the confirmation page with barcode;
  • A photo: 48mm × 33mm, white background, color, bareheaded, taken within the last 6 months — upload the digital version and keep one printed copy;
  • Travel plans or an invitation letter — either one is enough: round-trip flight booking plus hotel bookings, or an invitation letter from an entity or individual in China. You do not need both.

Non-U.S. citizens add proof of legal residence in the U.S.; if you have held a China visa before, send the old passport too so the consulate can check your record.

3. Four mail-in steps, fully trackable

4. Timing and fees: stated separately, discounts on service fees only

Regular consulate processing takes 4 business days to pickup; express takes 3 business days and needs consulate approval. Add the Colorado–Los Angeles mailing time both ways, and allow about 2 weeks in total even when everything goes smoothly — the closer your departure date, the earlier you should mail. Fees, stated separately: full service $200 + government fee $140 + courier $20; drop-off and pickup only (you complete the form yourself) $120 + government fee $140; express adds a $25 government express fee + our $50–$100 express fee. Families pay full service fee for the first applicant and 20% off the service fee from the second; government and courier fees are never discounted. The consulate website is the final authority.

From Colorado, a tourist visa is a four-step mail-in job: contact us for the checklist and you can start the same day — no flight to California for a visa. See also our Colorado service page.
