The short version first: on submission day, the trip itself — not your documents — is what most often goes wrong: the wrong building, no parking, or a slow security line can cost you your number. Settle the address, parking, and arrival time in advance, and the visit goes smoothly.
The Consulate General's main building is at 443 Shatto Place, but the Document Hall for visas, passports, and Travel Permits is on the 3rd floor of 500 Shatto Place. Navigate to the Document Hall address directly — searching only for "Chinese Consulate" can send you to the other building. The hall is open weekdays 9:00 AM–2:00 PM and closed on public holidays; check the Consulate General's website before you leave to confirm it is open that day.
Skipping the car can be simpler: look up the bus or Metro route to 500 Shatto Place in advance and pick a departure that gets you there 30 minutes early; for a rideshare, set the drop-off on the Shatto Place side, not at the main building. Whatever you choose, allow time for walking, the elevator, and the security check — bags are inspected, so the less you carry, the faster you pass.
Prefer not to make the trip yourself? Contact us — we submit and pick up for you; you just mail us your passport. Office hours and addresses are as published on the Consulate General's website.
