You cannot get a Z visa without a Foreigner's Work Permit Notification. The Z visa itself is a single-entry, roughly 30-day bridge visa — after entry you still need a Work Permit and a work-type Residence Permit.

Bottom line first: the Z visa is not the finish line for working in China — it is the middle link in a chain. The order is: your employer in China first obtains a Foreigner's Work Permit Notification, you use that Notification to apply for the Z visa in the US, and after entry you obtain a Work Permit and a work-type Residence Permit. The document that actually lets you work long-term and travel in and out repeatedly is the Residence Permit at the end — not the Z sticker in your passport. Get the order wrong and everything after it stalls.
A Z visa cannot be arranged as "get the visa first, find the job later." The employer must first apply to the local authorities for a Foreigner's Work Permit Notification. The employer starts this step; you supply supporting materials, typically passport details, a resume, degree certificates, and proof of work experience. Documents issued abroad usually need authentication or translation, as local rules require.
Do not book non-refundable flights or resign your current job before the Notification is in hand — it is the starting point of the whole chain, and nothing after it can move until it is issued. Processing times vary by city, so allow generous time rather than planning around the fastest case.
Once the Work Permit Notification is issued, the visa step follows. In the US it runs much like a regular visa application:
The Z visa is usually single-entry with a stay of about 30 days — just long enough to complete the steps that follow. After entry, move quickly on three things:
Family members generally travel on S1/S2 private-affairs visas and must likewise obtain the matching Residence Permit within the required window after entry — they cannot stay long-term on the visa alone.
Before you plan around a China job, first confirm that your employer can obtain the Work Permit Notification, then schedule the visa and flights around it.
