Bottom line first: regular service picks up on the 4th business day, express on the 3rd — a gain of just 1 day. Express costs an extra $25 and must be approved by the consulate. So if your schedule allows, regular service is fine; and when time is truly tight, the bottleneck is usually not that one day, but the steps before it.
1. The official timeline: 4 days regular, 3 days express
Per the LA Consulate's published processing times:
- Regular service: pickup on the 4th business day after submission. Submit on Monday, pick up on Thursday, as a rule.
- Express service: pickup on the 3rd business day, subject to consulate approval plus a $25 express fee.
These are business days — weekends and US/Chinese holidays don't count. A regular application submitted on Friday won't be ready until the following Thursday, and consulate holiday closures push it further.
2. Express is not "same-day," and approval is not guaranteed
Three common misunderstandings, cleared up:
- No same-day pickup. The 3rd business day is the fastest the consulate offers — there is no "submit today, collect tomorrow" option.
- Express must be approved. Paying the $25 does not automatically make it express; if the consulate doesn't approve, it proceeds as regular.
- Some cases take longer. The consulate states that some applications take longer than 4 business days, with no pickup date marked on the slip — you'll be notified instead. Express can't fix that either.
3. Count all three stages, not just the days after submission
Watching only "4 days vs. 3 days" is misleading. The full timeline has three stages:
- Stage 1: COVA online pre-review, usually 1–3 business days — longer if your materials are returned for corrections.
- Stage 2: processing after submission, 4 business days regular, 3 express.
- Stage 3: the pickup trip — the consulate does not mail visas back, so doing it yourself means another trip to collect.
Even when everything goes smoothly, allow 1–2 weeks end to end. Work backward from your departure date, not forward from your submission date.
4. Is express worth it? Do the math against your departure date
- Pickup date is 3+ days before departure: regular service is enough — save the $25.
- Short by exactly that 1 day: express closes the gap and is worth it — provided the consulate approves and your pre-review has already passed with complete materials.
- Already short by several days: express won't save you. Adjust your travel plans or get your materials in for pre-review first, instead of waiting at the submission stage.
In short: express is a fix for being 1 day short, not a cure-all for being late. For the latest official times, see the consulate's visa fees and processing times page.
5. How we can help
- Same-day submission once materials are complete — no waiting for a free day to visit the consulate; we submit as soon as pre-review passes.
- Drop-off and pickup — we make both consulate trips for you and return your passport as agreed.
Drop-off only from $120, form filing + drop-off/pickup package $180 (consular fees not included); express service $50–$100. Contact us with your departure date and we'll work backward and tell you whether express is worth it.
