COVA is the mandatory first step for China visas in the US — and you can't edit the form after submitting. Wrong jurisdiction, wrong photo format, name mismatching the passport: the 7 most common return reasons explained.

Since September 30, 2025, everyone applying for a Chinese visa in the US must start with COVA (China Online Visa Application): fill out the form online, upload supporting documents, and only after the preliminary review passes can you submit your passport in person. The key warning: you cannot edit the form after submitting, and a failed preliminary review sends you back for corrections. Read these 7 tips before you start.
Choose the consulate based on where you live. The Chinese Consulate General in Los Angeles covers: Southern California, Arizona, Hawaii, New Mexico, Utah, Colorado, and the Pacific Islands. Picking the wrong jurisdiction gets your application returned — the easiest mistake to make, and the biggest time-waster.
Use a digital photo for the online upload, and print one paper copy to bring when you submit your passport. Requirements from our earlier guide: 33mm × 48mm, white background, color, bareheaded, taken within the last 6 months. Upload in JPEG format, each file under 2MB.
Your English name must be identical to your passport information page, including middle names and every spelling. Don't skip former names or place of birth — fill in everything truthfully.
Questions marked * are mandatory: if they don't apply, select "Not Applicable" — never leave them blank, and never make something up. Your travel plan and dates must be consistent with your invitation letter and flight bookings; contradictions are a top return reason.
China's Exit and Entry Administration Law states clearly: applicants who engage in fraud or fail to submit required materials will be refused a visa, and the visa authority may give no reason. Be honest about your work history, education, and family information.
The deadline that matters: once your status changes to "Passport to Be Submitted," you have 30 days to submit your documents — otherwise the system automatically cancels your application and you'll need to re-apply. That's a direct quote from the LA Consulate's visa FAQ.
