Chinese Passport Renewal: App Filing, Materials, and Timeline

Renewing a Chinese passport in Los Angeles? Everything is filed online through the “中国领事” (Chinese Consulate) app; passports are printed off-site with a ~10-working-day turnaround and no expedited option. Angel Visa Services walks you through the process, photo rules, and mailing pitfalls.

If your Chinese passport is about to expire, step one is not a trip to the consulate — it's the “中国领事” (Chinese Consulate) app. The Consulate General in Los Angeles handles passport renewals entirely online; walk-in applications are not accepted. Passports are printed off-site, take about 10 working days, and there is no expedited service.

Here is the official process broken down into four steps.

1. When can you renew?

You can normally apply when your passport has less than one year of validity left. If you still have more than a year but genuinely need a new passport — for example, another country's long-stay visa requires 15+ months of validity — you can request an early renewal case by case.

2. The four steps

  • Step 1: File in the app and upload your photo. Complete the renewal application in the “中国领事” app and upload your ID photo. Review happens inside the app — follow up on any requests to supplement materials or attend a video interview.
  • Step 2: Choose a submission method (three options). (a) Apply online, submit materials in person, pick up in person; (b) apply online, submit in person, have the new passport mailed back; (c) apply online, mail your materials, have the new passport mailed back. Note: “mail your materials, pick up in person” is not offered — decide when you apply.
  • Step 3: Submit. Mail to 500 Shatto Place, Room 310, Los Angeles, CA 90020 (Attn: Visa and Passport Office); write “Passport” on the envelope.
  • Step 4: Wait and collect. The ~10-working-day clock starts when your materials arrive at the consulate (or the day after mailing). If you chose in-person pickup, collect within about a month of issuance.

3. Photo rules: no AI or beautified photos

The consulate explicitly warns against AI-generated or beautified/retouched ID photos — they can trigger repeated material requests, delay your case, and even cause problems at immigration checkpoints. A real, recent (within 6 months), white-background, bare-head color photo is the safest choice.

4. Four mailing pitfalls

5. What happens to your old passport?

You normally submit the original old passport with your application. If you still need it for other business, your only option is to submit in person and explain on the spot — the consulate handles this case by case and may let you keep it temporarily. But the old passport will be voided during review (at your own risk), and you must surrender it when collecting the new one.
